I recently took a flight to Tampa FL. and met up with a friend that lives in Clearwater. He picked me up at the airport and provided me with a bedroom in his house, which was a real blessing since I had no hotels to book. It was just a 5 day trip but I enjoyed every minute of it.
The city of Clearwater is divided in 2 main areas: Mainland and Clearwater Beach. Situated on the west cost of Florida (Gulf of Mexico), this city has some of the most beautiful beaches in the US.
My first impression of Clearwater was that it’s a very clean city, both on mainland and on the beach side. There are 3 ways to go to Clearwater Beach: by car, by trolley bus or by ferry. I did not rent a car so I mainly used the trolley option: $5 for an unlimited day pass. On the mainland side, I loved a coffee shop called “Grindhouse”. Their coffee selection is impressive and the service is very good.
Clearwater (mainland) also has a beautiful marina. At the time of my visit, it was full and there was even a waiting list for a slip rental.
Before arriving to Pier 60 and the main beach area, there is a Marina (on your left) where dozens of boats are ready to take out fisherman or tourists eager to spot some dolphins. Prices do vary quite a bit so shop around, you might save a lot of money.
One of the popular attractions in Clearwater Beach is Pier 60. There is a shop located midway on the pier where you can find all kinds of souvenirs. If you wish to go to the end the pier, there is a small $1 fee to pay. At the end of the pier, fishermen are trying their luck and dolphins often swim around the end of the pier. The white sandy beach is quite long and the sea is very calm compared to the Atlantic side of Florida.
The beach is extremely clean. The water is nice and warm. Vendors are present directly on the beach to rent some equipment like jet skis. On Mandalay Avenue, you can find great restaurants and it’s only a couple of minutes walk from Pier 60.
Accommodations right on the beach can be quite expensive. Hotels and AirBnB’s in mainland Clearwater are a good solution to save big on your trip. Taking the time to shop around will save you lots of money and allow you to use those savings for your next trip!
Sunsets in Florida are stunning. They are by far my best memories for this trip. Clearwater is definitely an excellent travel destination. However, according to a local I talked to, the Month of March may not be the best month to travel there because of March break…
